If an immigrant says that he works at a construction site or in a construction company, this does not always mean that he builds skyscrapers that become the hallmark of the city. Construction companies do not only build houses.
They also do apartment renovations (from painting walls to complete reconstruction).
Construction companies that have a general contractor license can conduct construction and hire other specialized licensed companies. Some companies specialize in plumbing, some in HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). Some companies are engaged in pouring concrete, drywall, plumbing, tiling, painting, thermal insulation, electrical work, etc.
How to find a job in a construction company?
The same methods work as usual: job search sites (indeed.com, сraigslist.org, ziprecruiter.com, etc.). But most often, new immigrants get into such companies in two ways: social networks and acquaintances. My friend Jerry, for example, hires only on the recommendations of acquaintances.
What will make your job search easier?
Start by studying the regulatory framework for construction in the state where you are going to work. In New York, this is the NYC DOB website. There you can find out that construction sites do not hire without an SST card (Site Safety Training).
